Once Upon A Sign opened in December of 2006 as a very personal venture. My original little corner allowed me to make a living surrounded by those things I love best--Words. Our new store, though greatly expanded is no different. From the moment you walk into Once Upon A Sign, you are surrounded by words of every description. Words that are romantic, words that are nostalgic, and others that are playfully humorous. One of the most wonderful benefits to owning this shop are the many stories I've gathered from those who purchase my signs. Every person has a unique reason for the sign they buy.
Once Upon A Sign specializes in American made gifts because I think it is important to support American workers--especially local artisans. Also, wherever possible, we try to buy products from vendors who practice responsible earth stewardship.
In addition to signs and cards, you will also find lovely pieces of glass. My mother who ran Mag-de-lene, a small antique shop on Grove Street, loved beautiful glass of every description and so do I.
Once Upon A Sign in it's previous location had an interesting past. During the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's it was the home to Blue Bird Taxi Company owned by Bill and Mayo Deaver. They say that the true history of Hendersonville is entrusted to the now silent testimonies of the taxi drivers who drove many a local citizen in the early morning hours.
